Lilly Sauen works predominantly in ceramics. Her sculptural paintings explore the metamorphic qualities of clay - how it can be exposed to extreme environmental pressures yet become enduring and even beautiful. She considers the presence of this metaphor in humanity, voicing our capacity to transform. She uses colour to convey us into the moment, emphasised by a sculptural canvas that echoes natural phenomena, such as mineral deposits in stone or the ripples in shale of an ancient riverbed, capturing the numinous experience of deep time.
A recent graduate of Central Saint Martins, she exhibits with the Daguet-Bresson gallery in Paris and at PAD London, Paris and St Tropez. A body of her work is held as part of the collection at UCLH spanning eight campuses.
Working with clay for over a decade, Sauen has centred her practice around its healing properties, developing a process which engages the movement of the body with the organic material to form a somatic meditation. This is reflected in the work, which lends itself to tranquil environments.
